Threshold To Maine Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area 2010 Results Summary The Threshold To Maine Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Area works in partnership with the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service to improve the ability of communities in York, Cumberland, Oxford, and Franklin counties to balance natural resource use with conservation. This is accomplished by focusing on social, economic, and environmental activities identified, designed, and implemented by local people. This year the Council continued its focus on agriculture development with a continuation of establishing Shared Use Commercial Kitchens, working with local farm groups and organizations on web based direct marketing initiatives, and helping communities establish local Agriculture Commissions and assisting those organizations develop strategic initiatives. Threshold To Maine was also awarded the “Two Chiefs Award” from USDA for its work with the Forest Working Group on forestry education. In FY 2010, the Council worked on the following projects: Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association Commercial Kitchen funding, Strong “Harness the Wealth” project, Forestry workshops, facilitating strategic planning for the Wilton Group, NASA Solutions Network investigating decision making models for agriculture and forestry issues, assisting 4 landowners install seasonal high tunnels for expanded crop production, Of Farms and Fables a theater project dedicated to family farming, and assistance to the Forest Fragmentation Coalition working with organizations and land trusts on keeping large blocks of unfragmented forests intact.
